Faith Fact #5: You Can Begin Using Your Depression for Christ

Last week we looked at moving from being a victim to asking God to use our depression for His glory.  This week, let’s look at how this can start taking place in our lives.

Let’s begin with the following scripture:

“All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.” (2 Corinthians 1:3–4 NLT).

In the above passage we have the Faith Fact needed to put our depression to good use:  God will comforts us in ALL our troubles!  If we look to the promises in the Bible when we are depressed, believing in them rather than believing in our temporary emotions, we will discover God, “our merciful Father and the source of all comfort.”  As we lean on Him and allow His strength to infuse our weaknesses, we are not only comforted, we also grow in our spiritual life.

But that is not the end of the story!  Verse 4 says that God comforts us for another reason, as well.  He wants us to comfort others with the same comfort God has given us!  After all, who can best comfort someone who is fighting depression?  I believe it is someone just like you.  You know what they’re going through.  They know you understand their battles and weaknesses. And as you share with that depressed person what you’ve gone through, and how you have discovered the way to rely upon God and His promises, your depression becomes a way for God to touch their lives and begin giving comfort and healing.

So, what’s next?  Look to God for comfort during your depression by reading positive scriptures that contain promises you can claim.  Then look for others to help, asking God to flow through your depression, using it to change the lives of those around you.
