Last week, I told you about the shocking news that my co-author and good friend, Mark Sutton, was to have emergency quintuple bypass surgery in February of this year. Mark also suffers from pulmonary fibrosis, a fact he shares readily in our Conquering Depression Seminars. I was instantly shocked, dismayed, concerned, and, yes, depressed. I pulled out all stops rallying everyone I knew in the Arklatex to pray.

Mark had his surgery and the main concern was getting him off the ventilator given his underlying lung disease. All day, the following Friday, the day of his surgery, I kept track from texts sent out by Donna Sutton. Mark did well during the surgery and only had to have four bypasses. Well, I can tell you that’s bad enough! I was stunned when Donna texted everyone Friday evening, about 4 hours after Mark’s surgery, that he was off the ventilator and had CALLED HER ON THE PHONE!

What? Yes, God is good! Mark had a rocky recovery and it was not without complications but his recovery was amazing and yes, God answers prayers. I did not get to see Mark until about three weeks ago. Sherry and I planned a trip to Orlando so I could attend a radiology conference and while there, we had dinner with Mark and Donna. Mark looked better than he had in months. In fact, his energy level was much better than before his surgery. Again, I was stunned at how well he was doing.

And, so this past week, two things happened. First, my son, Sean, sent me his final edit of our video footage from our first Conquering Depression Seminar from October, 2014. Mark and I held the seminar at South Orlando Baptist Church and Sean came with me to video the seminar. Our main objective was to get something in the “can” in case Mark was incapacitated during any future seminar. At the very worst, we could show his part as video footage.

Sean is very busy with his job in Austin, Texas but he managed to put together a final edit from three cameras and it was amazing. Not because I was in it. Amazing because of the way he cut and edited the video footage under very trying circumstances that would make any videographer cry real tears. As I watched bits and pieces of the video, I found myself in tears. I was so moved by what Mark had to say and I was there the night he said it! So, I called him.

This was the second good thing that night. Mark talked to me for almost thirty minutes, something that was impossible for him to do just months ago. He was energized and ready to do more seminars! Again, God is so good and His plans are always grander and bigger and more than we could ever anticipate. Soon, we will have a dedicated page on the website for our seminar and the video on the landing page will be replaced with a short “commercial” for the seminar.

This is why you haven’t heard from us very often so far this year. It has been a difficult year for both of our families. It has been a year of cyclic depression. It was been a year to, once again, test our faith in a God who knows all. And, for Mark, a very trying year with his health problems. Mark and Donna want to thank all of your for your thoughts and prayers during this time. And, we hope to see you someday at a Conquering Depression Seminar!
